Coming Soon—X-Men: From the Ashes—Summer 2024
The new age of X-Men begins with in July 2024 with a selection of new X-Men titles with new groups of X-Men fighting new villains.
The Krakoa Era is coming to a close and bringing the X-Men a new age of stories. The new X-Men: From the Ashes Era is a actually a recycled title from the 1980s.
In 1981, after a number of cataclysmic story lines, Chris Claremont brought a more grounded set of stories to the lives of the X-Men. Previously the X-Men had been in space, battling Dark Phoenix and travelling into the future.
The From the Ashes arc, running in Uncanny X-Men #168-176, saw Cyclops reconsidering his place in the X-Men and his love life (he hooks up with a woman who looks exactly like Jean Gray—talk about having a type), Storm is finding her powers are slightly out of control, Kitty Pryde is finding her place in the X-Men team and getting a little romantic with Colossus.
The Summer 2024 X-Men reboot of titles has give us the indication that there will be three main titles and three new groups of X-Men.
In X-Men (written by Jed MacKay with art by Ryan Stegman), a new team are setting up their base in Alaska. Cyclops is leading the team with Magneto in the background (looking a lot like a creepy Professor X), Beast (who was recently evil), Kid Omega (who was recently a head working for Sabretooth, Temper (formerly Oya), Psylocke (who could be Betsy but might be Kwannon) and Magik and Juggernaut.
There is a lot going on in this team, but it is the main X-Men title, so what else would we expect?
In Uncanny X-Men (written by Gail Simone with art by David Marquez), the team is situation in Gambit’s home town of New Orleans. If they are hanging out in the Big Easy, this is going to be a different teams.
In addition to Gambit and Rogue, Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Jubilee are going to be making up a little more of fun loving, hard hitting group. There is a lot to like in this group, but also a great deal of volatile behaviour. This group seems to be without adult supervision. Of course there is Wolverine who is super old, but when it comes to clear adult thinking Nightcrawler might be the most sensible of the group.
The new title, the Expectational X-Men (written by Eve L. Ewing with art by Carmen Carnero) brings a new approach with good old X-Men style.
Kate Pryde is bringing together three new mutants, Bronze, Axo, and Melee, who are in serious need of training and supervision. Kate is going to have a little help from Emma Frost. And by help we are expecting a great of deal of tension between these two teachers with different approaches and forceful attitudes.
Bronze, Axo, and Melee better be ready because they are in for some serious instruction, especially as Emma Frost seems to be riding an inflatable floating surfboard. Super interested in the story behind that one.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to wait until July to start getting into these stories. Chris Claremont’s X-Men: From the Ashes from 1981, is worth a read. And on Free Comic Book day (it’s next weekend if you haven’t already noticed) will feature a X-Men preview along with the Marvel Blood Hunt teaser.
X-Men’s new From the Ashes approach is starting in July 2024 with new X-Men, Uncanny X-Men and Expectational X-Men titles.
In the meantime, check out Chris Claremont’s classic storyline with X-Men: From the Ashes which collects Uncanny X-Men #168-176 (this is a paid affiliate link and as an Amazon Associate I will earn a small income from qualifying purchases, but won’t cost you any more).
Yes, I always think it’s awkward that a guy who’s several hundred years old is hanging out with a bunch of high schoolers. Is he the mascot? It’s the Xavier Wolverines! And thus starts the saga where everyone has to play them in sports. Did that ball just move by itself? The linebacker hits like a truck... OK we need this arc in some form, it’d be funny but I’ll probably get sued by Disney if I use AI to write the arc of the Xavier Wolverines.
